Set within a former residence of local merchant, Inase Otsu Machiya Bed and Breakfast is set in Otsu, 700 metres from Mii-dera Temple. Each room is fitted with a flat-screen TV. A beautiful, historical building set in the old part of Ōtsu, I spent here a night before heading to Kyōto. The staff is friendly and competent, breakfast was abundant and tasty.

Mizu, the hostess of Smile guesthouse is a very kind and helpful person who speaks good English. She helped and guided us to make our stay even better. The guest house is a traditional Japanese house. Beautiful and full of details. And next to that you can eat fresh strawberries at the Tanaberry farm, which is a 8 minutes walking distance. We can recommend everyone to stay here. As we immediately extended our stay the day we arrived and are planning to definitely stay again the next time we travel to Japan.

My wife and I are not young folks anymore. The trip to the bathroom during the night was somewhat difficult for us. The bedroom was on the upper floor in the lovely traditional Japanese house. The narrow stairway was challenging for us. There is ample room downstairs and perhaps owners would accommodate a request to put the bedding there.
