The host was just superb. She treated every guest as if he/she was her child. Only a few minutes to the center and she always was able to find a parking lot for me. My best stay during my 3 week tour around the Balkan.

Fly to Tirana International Airport, then drive 230km south to Gjirokastër (approx. 4 hours). Alternatively, from within Albania, take a direct bus from Tirana (4-5 hours). No direct water transport available. Transfers may be required for international travellers.
The most convenient airport for Gjirokastër is Tirana International Airport, due to its frequent domestic and international flights. It's approximately 230km away, a manageable journey for travellers.
Gjirokastër, Albania, lacks a public transport system. However, the city is compact and walkable, with most attractions within a 2km radius. Taxis are readily available and affordable for longer distances. Cycling is not recommended due to the city's hilly terrain. Driving is possible, but be aware of narrow, winding roads.
The Old Town of Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the best area to stay. It offers easy access to historic attractions like Gjirokastër Castle and Skenduli House, and a variety of local restaurants and shops.

The town is beautiful and interesting for its fortified houses. Also is on UNESCO list. The old centre is very pleasant to walk around, it has an atmosphere. Car traffic was quite problematic, the roads between the houses are very narrow and very steep. Also, Google maps did not have good enough background and often led us somewhere where, for example, instead of a road was staircase. The old stone roads were very slippery in the rain ;-) Ono or two night is enought to stay here.

Albanian thoughts:
Albanian thoughts:
Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it...
The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.
We were not exactly sure how to get to the hotel entrance....We were so close and someone asked me which hotel I was looking for...Voila, I was directed at that point and in few meters, I was greeted by the owner! It is THE REAL CENTER of the city and great location. It was great to experience Albanian breakfast-FULL COURSE and delicious! When we somehow lost ourselves driving in the sloppy narrow street in the center, the owner found us and helped us to get out of that place. We also got great travel hints at the breakfast time.
We had a fantastic stay here in Gjirokaster. Service like most of Albania is incredible and the apartment is perfectly located slap bang in the centre literally seconds walking distance to everywhere. Everything seems new with the apartment even though you are staying in an original house. Free parking is also available about 5 mins walk from the hotel. Breakfast was included at a nearby hotel and is delicious and huge! Will definitely recommend to anyone thinking of visiting Gjirokaster. Thanks for the incredible stay!
The hotel is in the city centre hosted in a beautiful historical building; we stayed in the suite, the former living room used for ceremony and daily life by the family’s members. The breakfast is really a beautiful moment, served in the terrace of the house by the super kind staff of the hotel. The atmosphere of Old Bazaar hotel is unique, very recommended to live the original vibes of Gjirokaster old city, a beautiful experience that we loved a lot. Thank you for your kindness, we will never forget it!
English: The place was very clean and well kept. The host was so nice and a great. They helped us with our luggage and fed us fruit after our long drive to Gjirokaster. I would reccomend this pace to everyone.
Këtë ritëm do ua rekomandoja të gjithëve.
This is a great little apartment for one or a two night stay. Apartment was really clean, bed was comfortable, breakfast was all homemade and plentiful. Walking distance to see the sights of Gjirokaster and where the buses pick up and drop off. Yes you do have to walk up the big hill to the Old Town and Castle but it really is not that bad. Owners were lovely and friendly, even if they didn't speak little or no English. Highly recommend this apartment.
The host Martin was awesome - he helped us a lot when our car broke down and gave us great recommendations for restaurants. The hotel is located in the oldest street in Gjirokaster and very close to the old town. It just opened a few months ago and is very new. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, the bathrooms were very modern. The view from the balcony (see photo) is also really great, and the breakfast there was delicious.
The location is superb. The hotel is right in the center of Gjirokaster at the Bazaar with a terrace offering a wonderful view over the city
The owning family is friendly, welcoming and helpful. They were always there for us and offered a great service.
The breakfast was tasty and plentiful, offering a range of different local foods.
The rooms were clean, with a good A/C and came with some complementary water.
The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, breakfast was lovely, and owner was incredible – the hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the old town center, and so he offered rides in and out of town at the drop of a hat. All I had to do was call or message him and he'd pick me up within 5-10 minutes. Amazing service and definitely recommend for anyone visiting Gjirokaster.
The staff was super helpfull and friendly. Always paying attention (in a subtle way) and making sure that we had everything we needed. The service was extraordinary! Rooms were comfy and spacious. The food in the restaurant was great and reasonable priced.
The view from the hotel was fantastic!! We will stay here again the next time we visit Gjirokastër.
My room wasn't large but it was adequate...Very nice and responsive owner...Large fridge in room...Strong wi-fi...Shower has plenty of high water though it is a little small...Large balcony. The hotel is not in new-town Gjirokaster but it is only a few blocks away. A road right outside the hotel goes to Old Town - about a 3/4 mile walk uphill.
Staying at Hotel Kalemi 2 was a truly unique experience. The historical property was beautifully updated and maintained. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and the breakfast was the absolute highlight of the stay. The proximity to the old town and castle was perfect for a quick 1-night trip.
The owners of Hotel Musee go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. The breakfast is incredible, with each morning bringing new delicious surprises. We really felt welcomed and at home for the 5 days we were there. I would definitely recommend this accommodation to anyone going to Gjirokaster, you will not be disappointed.
By far the best guest house we ve ever stayed. The room was clean and tidy. The hostess made sure we had everything we needed and always asked what else we d like. The breakfast was fulfilling and the view breathtaking. We ll definitely stay there again when we visit Gjirokaster. Thank you, Foteini, you ve been incredible!
Clean, large, nicely furnished apartment with great views. Good communication with owner who helped with parking, which was important as the parking and driving in Gjirokaster is extremely challenging! Anyone who has mobility issues would definitely struggle to walk up and down into town - it's up a fairly steep hill.
This is the perfect hotel for a weekend getaway in Gjirokaster city. Gorgeous building, and it only gets more breathtaking when you walk in. High quality rooms, and high quality service. The staff at this property are all great! They all go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable.
Staff was smiley and very helpful at the hotel. They prepared a nice breakfast for us for the requested time which was earlier than their standard breakfast time. Staff helped to carry my luggage to the room and also helped after check-out to carry close to our car due to stone streets.
We were really glad that we found this little cosy hotel, built with love. Beautiful place, quiet, clean! All the family very nice and kind. We deffinetly recommend it and if one day we go to Gjirokaster again, we will stay there.
Thank you.
The hotel is very modern in the old city of Gjirokastër. The breakfast was very tasty. Also the location was perfect for a stroll through the tourist sights. The rooms were very clean and the beds comfortable.
A really cool way to experience Gjirokaster. You really are staying in the 1800’s. Fun to light a fire and keep warm .
The place is big and really a unique experience.
