Very interesting and quaint decor! Definitely a creative and postmodern perspective on incorporating the history of the building and town into the design.

It was well located for the Steam Punk Festival a short walk away from the Victorian area. The room was in the annex round the back overlooking the park park, but we could see the sea from our window which was nice. The staff were helpful and chatty.
Really liked the old world feel of the front part of the building, grand staircase, and chandeliers etc.
Bed was comfy, so were the pillows.

I like the location with a nice walk to the precinct. The bed was extremely comfortable & room spacious. Being allowed to arrive earlier than 2.00 was very convenient. Staff very hospitable. Good kitchen.

The North Otago (base in Oamaru) area is a hidden gem. Penguins, seals, steam punk, cheese factory, crayfish and blue cod at Moeraki, historic sites. And good restaurants in Oamaru and the area (Whitestone Diner -- as long as you like cheese, Fat Sally's, Fishwife, Moeraki Tavern, Hampden Fish shop and others).
We go back regularly and the area rarely disappoints. To enjoy fully you need a car.

It's a really cool town, the victorian precinct is amazing and you can spend hours just walking and admiring the buildings. There's a farmers market on Sundays and a lovely train that departs from the front to Steampunk museum to the penguin colony. It's a short but beautiful ride.
There are sea lions and seals everywhere and it's guaranteed you'll take nice pictures from them 😉

The penguin sanctuary was lovely and we saw penguins during the day in the nests. The evening tour was fully booked so get in early if you want to do that.. The steam punk museum was suitably odd and they were very friendly when we got caught in a downpour and stayed sheltering there while they were closing. Plenty of chance to see seals basking on the foreshore.
The victorian precinct however was just a street - possibly more exciting if you are from New Zealand of Australia but we live in a property older than anything on the street so not really that exciting if you are from the UK or the older cities in the US

A very pleasant surprise, was recommended to stop here by a friend, so glad we did. A quirky place , so much history. The Victorian quarter alone was wonderful. Steampunk also worth a look. Easy to walk around the town too. Ps some hilly streets 😀
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Vicarage in Oamaru. Our hosts, Jacqui and Niel were very welcoming and helpful. Our room and all the facilities were very comfortable, clean and spacious. The little personal touches and general attention to detail add to the lovely ambience. Great location and on-site parking - everything the town has to offer is within walking distance. Can highly recommend! Thank you for a very pleasant stay :-]
Really comfortable room, and location lovely in the country south of Oamaru, but we were the only residents in the whole hotel that night, and there was no restaurant or any other facility open, not even a bar or for breakfast. So while the room was lovely, we can't comment on anything else as we didn't get to experience them. But if you do come here, please do get Shane to show you the chapel - it is absolutely stunning.
The layout was lovely and social. Cosy and welcoming. Beautiful gardens so close to the beach. Shame only spent one night would have loved to have spent more time there. Well equipped kitchen and great decor. Very clean and organized slept like a log. Loved Oamaru too quirky art galleries right up my street. With good selection of restaurants 10 mins away. All good 👍
Thanks to the hospitable and friendly staff it's been for me the very best accommodation in New Zealand. I was very greatful to them even for not being so strict with checking out times, free left luggage room and so on. And Oamaru itself - you must visit the town to understand the atmosphere. Would love to come once again.
Conveniently located motel, with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The rooms are very large, so it’s nice to spread out a bit. Also, they give you real milk for your tea and coffee - very exciting!
The location is very convenient for the historic centre of Oamaru. Just a short walk/drive down the road.
This was such a fantastic place to stay in Oamaru. The location could not have been better — right in the middle of Old Town, but tucked off the street which meant there was no noise. The place was wonderfully decorated and had everything you could need, and the fire was a nice touch. Highly recommend.
Very warm (electric blanket and heater in room with wood stoves in common areas) with a comfortable and clean room, fantastic location within easy walking distance (5-15 minutes) of many Oamaru attractions including penguin colony and historical area. Staff are extremely friendly and always accessible.
clean and modern. Cool design worthy of a boutique hotel. Themed rooms with a bit of steam punk vibe. Good size bathroom, good shower. Bright , good lighting. Quiet air conditioner. Good
linens. Easy stroll down Thames Street to attractions and places to eat. Did not eat breakfast at hotel.
I loved staying at Oamaru Backpackers. My room was very cozy and comfy, the kitchen and the living room were so nice and bright with everything you need to cook and to relax. Very nice view. So far one of the best hostel I've been to since I'm in NZ last year. Sadly I only stayed one night.
Lovely old hotel among several other spectacular historical buildings and within easy walking distance of Oamaru's attractions. Our room had been recently upgraded and had a nice modern bathroom with a big shower.
Great communication beforehand, amazing location for seeing the penguins in town! So much room for a family used to hotels on this trip and having two rooms with couches to relax on was delightful!
The staff was excellent and very helpful and receptive to our needs. They went above and beyond what of hotel staff. The room near and clean and the bathroom had been recently updated.
The man who owns it was very friendly and helpful, place clean, no extra charge for dog, or the two grandchildren who we had come and stayed over while we were in Oamaru
