Renovated in 2015, IORI Stay is nestled in Takayama. This traditional Japanese-style townhouse was created in collaboration with local artists and boasts designs with both modern and traditional... Such a memorable stay in the middle of an iconic area. The welcome by the hosts was so warm and we loved the interior design of the space so much. The building g is an ode to Japanese design and featured amazing amenities like a Japanese hinoki wood tub plus local Hida Furniture from Kashiwa.

Very nice riyokan. Our family enjoyed it a lot. The checkin with tablet was easy and went very well. The support from the owner was very good : we call late 1st night to understand how to get hot water and received immediately the answer. I definitely recommend and we will come back with pleasure.

Located in Sakashita, 46 km from Gero Station and 24 km from Ōi, ゲストハウス にじゅうよん offers a garden and air conditioning. Beautiful, spacious and well equipped ryokan all to ourselves. Takashi-San, our gracious host, also owns the Cafe next door and an amazing collection of records. We had dinner there and the curry and carbonara he prepared were delicious. Plus he played some beautiful music from the 70’s. The ryokan is fully equipped , well heated and the futon beds were extremely comfortable. Takashi san even gave us water bottles to warm the beds at night. We slept so well. We were only two and could not believe we had this huge beautiful house to ourselves. Takashi-san is an attentive host : he provided juice, snacks , water , coffee , tea etc all free. It is such a quiet and relaxing place off the beaten tracks.

Situated in Takayama in the Gifu region, with Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine and Fuji Folk Museum nearby, SORAMACHI - Vacation STAY 14338 provides accommodation with free private parking. Soramachi was a very comfortable house with good facilities. Probably the most spacious and nicest accomodation we experienced in our travels through Japan. Only stayed 2 nights but it provided a relaxing and quiet break from the crowds elsewhere. The house is right on the river and close to a tranquil temple walk and public bathhouse . It is an easy walk from there to the old quarter and we walked to the house with luggage from the station ( 1.4 km). The owners are obviously very house proud and welcoming. Highly recommend this accomodation.

Located in the centre of Takayama, TANIYA features an open-air bath, a garden, free WiFi, and free private parking for guests who drive. The building itself, as you can see from the pictures, is exquisite. If you are a fan of architecture or traditional craftsmanship, you will delight at just BEING in Taniya. This was almost a problem—I'm used to thinking of a hotel as a "crash pad" while exploring, and instead I wanted to spend hours and hours inside! Each morning was calm and peaceful: make a cup of green tea, then observe the way the light plays through the washi, the sound of water rushing by. I also particularly loved the bath; one of my favorite memories was enjoying it on a rainy, chilly night. We got home from dinner, I used the auto-fill function while I got ready for bed, then opened the window onto the courtyard and stepped in. Watching the moon through the rain, maple leaves, and steam curling up from the bath... it's like having your own personal onsen. Plus, each item in the villa was thoughtfully chosen, from the local sakes on offer in the fridge to the items provided in the bathroom to the super-soft pajamas. Even better were our hosts, who exemplified the Japanese concept of "omotenashi" (essentially, "hospitality" taken to its highest level). Well before arrival we were working with the Taniya concierge to make our plans happen (many thanks to Mahiro!). She handled making reservations at our desired restaurants and travel around town was provided as needed. Where she truly excelled was helping us troubleshoot our more ambitious ideas, such as: is there an open-air onsen near the Shinhotaka Ropeway with private baths? And how do we get there and back? The Kusakabe family were also gracious and friendly hosts, helping us along with the concierge and sharing their knowledge of Japan and Takayama plus their personal history—talking with them and touring the Folk Crafts Museum was a particular highlight, as many of the items on display are Kusakabe family heirlooms.

Impressive, carefully and tastefully restored house at the edge of town. Very comfy futons, very nice surroundings.
